Leeds’ Jordan Stevens has been banned from all football-related activity for six weeks for breaking Football Association betting principles, a punishment his team has known as”disproportionate”.
The midfielder admitted responsible for setting last time to 59 bets, five on matches involving the Whites.
Stevens will be suspended until 10 and has been fined #1,200.
“We are hugely disappointed in the FA’s decision of sanction,” explained Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear.
“To avoid young footballer from participate in any football activities at such a crucial period of the profession is a disproportionate punishment after a foolish error from a young participant.
“We are particularly disappointed that the sanction was determined by two former professional footballers who we expected would have experienced a better understanding of the effect of their choice.”
Stevens, who had been signed out of Forest Green in February 2018, has made a single first-team look since arriving at Elland Road.
While an independent commission said the #510.12 total staked was”modest” – together using Stevens not playing in any of the Leeds match he bet on – he said revealed a”wilful disregard for the rules” by continuing to wager following an FA education presentation, where the rules were discussed.
The two of Stevens’ bets on Leeds – on both groups to score twice – were seen as the most acute, carrying out a maximum”sporting sanction” of 12 months.
A comment statement from Rob Price, head of performance and medication at the club, said Stevens had”fought to incorporate himself” at Leeds, with emphasis on his difficulties with boredom, homesickness and anxiety.
“We can support Jordan during this procedure, he is a young footballer who needs educating on the risks of outside influences and how to conduct himself as a professional footballer,” the team added.
“As a team we feel that banning a 19-year-old footballer from even participating in training or interacting with all the club’s team is an excessive punishment”
