FA technical director Les Reed has admitted it might be a”demanding request” to stop Gareth Southgate from leaving his position as England boss to combine a Premier League club.
Southgate has managed a transformation since being promoted from his position as U21 manager in 2016, the summer, resulting in England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals along with the Nations League finals.
The 49-year-old’s only prior experience as a club manager arrived in a three-year spell at Middlesbrough, in where he had been sacked in 2009 his side had been expelled in the Premier League.
“It would be a tough ask based on what he had been provided,” Reed told Sky Sports News. “But I understand Gareth’s mindset right now is that he wishes to become an England boss that wins something.
“I think the allure of becoming the next England manager to carry us to a World Cup final is a powerful pull and I believe he knows that by doing that his stock’s not likely to return.
“Obviously it is something that we have in the back of our heads all of the time but I understand Gareth’s motivation is with this particular group and developing this team moving ahead.”
England will be seeking to keep their best start when they host Kosovo on Tuesday evening and have transported their impressive form beneath Southgate into qualifying for its 2020 Championships.
The side of southgate defeated Bulgaria 4-0 at Wembley on Saturday to make it three wins from three Group A, with 14 goals scored and one conceded.
