Trevor Bayliss is uncomplicated. Everything you see is what you receive.
He breathes and lives cricket and analyses every ball. Some might say he’s silent, but it when it’s necessary he only speaks and, even when he does, it is worth listening to.
His methods are old school, and that’s no bad thing. At international level, coaches may get a bit. That isn’t Trevor.
At a fielding drill, for example, he is all about a participant keeping low and assaulting the ball. Trev is about doing the basics nicely, although that is the sort of thing you are educated when you play the sport.
He keeps things really, very straightforward and, when it has to do with those fielding drills, I will not miss his yells of”reunite! Get up! Good throw!”
I didn’t know much about him when he was appointed besides Paul Farbrace, that could be Trev’s helper and was afterward in caretaker charge, saying he was a fantastic bloke.
We went to Desert Springs in Spain prior to the 2015 Ashes. On the airplane, he wasn’t giving much away, so that me and Ben Stokes beginning talking back to him in an Australian accent.
I believe he enjoyed it that we gave a rod to him, and he loosened up.
Later on precisely exactly the trip, a post night, after we had held, me and Stokesy pulled a hint. We pretended to have a row which finished with Stokesy flattening me. Trev was looking about as if to say”what have I summoned?”
Stokesy and trev have gone on to develop a relationship of mutual esteem. Stokesy has maintained up the accent, while I think Trev enjoys the manner Stokesy playswithout taking a backward step. “Keep your foot on the neck,” since Trev might state.
There’s the perception that he doesn’t do for the team. That couldn’t be further from fact.
If folks watch him watching the match, they don’t think he’s doing anything, but he is actually taking everything in, prepared to provide feedback.
He’ll understand if the length that is wrong’ve bowled, not produced the batsmen play contributed width that is too much, or enough.
At the end of their New Zealand innings, Through the World Cup final, I was off the field because I had ripped my side.
We were bowling a good deal of balls that were and one of them was hit for four. Trev was shouting”how about a bloody yorker?”
He’s just disappointed he can not bring himself to say anything although there have been instances when I thought he would tear off a strip us.
The group would be addressed by the captain, then ask Trev if he’s got anything to say.
“No.”
“OK, Trev, so when are you currently training?”
“Dunno”.
He’ll have his luggage packed and on his back, needing to escape from there, because he is so annoyed with the way that we have played.
The only time I’ve really seen him irate was after we lost to Scotland in the summer of 2018.
He said he had been embarrassed with how we’d played. All of the time with England, we will speak as a collective – we win as a team, we lose as a team.
On this occasion, he informed them what they do was not good enough if we needed to be the finest in the world and singled outside folks.
There are other times when I will think we’ve played and he will bring us back down into the ground.
It’s not through ranting and raving, but by laying out the truth.
When we won the World Cup semi-final against Australia, we had been observing in the room at Edgbaston.
Trev said:”That’s why Australians believe the English can not win anything. You are observing winning the semi-final, however, real winners win the closing.”
It refocused our heads.
Once the closing was won by us, you could tell he had been delighted, but his response said so much about him as a person.
Trev did not need to take it, although we had been doing a lap of Lord’s with the decoration. He kept saying”you have won it, not me”.
We had to beg him to pick this up, since we believed he was going to leave it and wander back it.
That’s his way. He doesn’t need the limelight.
He is, nevertheless, as strong as a bear. One time, in the dinner queue, we were on a trip of Australia and I tried to whip his shorts down.
Next thing, he had been along with me, pinning me down with his elbow in my face. “If you ever do this again…” he said. I learned my lesson.
He got a ferocious Aussie streak in him, particularly when he gets the sidearm thrower in his hand in the nets.
I guess he can down it at over 90mph, and that he really loves getting it back. Even the tailenders are trembling till they must confront Trev from the nets, so they are always good to him beforehand.
There have been instances when he’s clenched his fist and said to me”I’d love to offer you a whack”. That’s because I am one of the most popular ones in the area, but Trev and I have had a solid connection and he’s been very great.
I have left from the one-day team for your tour. Trev is very approachable, so I asked him what I had to do to get my location.
He explained he wished to see”a nasty streak” in me. I was planning on tour with the Lions, and he said I needed to prove to everybody that I was the best bowler on such trip, even if that meant bothering a few folks.
It worked. I went away thinking”I will show you, Trev”. Next time I played England, in a Test against West Indies, I required 5-41.
You eventually become close mates and can grow close, when you are with a coach for as long as we’ve been with Trev.
From a personal perspective, I can declare that Trev has backed and trusted me others wouldn’t havewhen I have struggled with accidents.
He’s the coach that led us to winning the World Cup. Each of the players will miss him. Trevor Bayliss is uncomplicated. Everything you see is exactly what you get.
