McLaren chief Zak Brown has worried the groups return to Mercedes engines in 2021 will not be for races being won by them in 29, the only catalyst.
McLaren last week declared that a return into the manufacturers energy unit after next when the agreement with Renault of the team comes to an end.
Brown, McLarens CEO, clarifies McLaren as being at amomentum-building style and states that the Mercedes deal will provide after farther piece to the mystery as they bid to go back to the front.
Asked when the shift in power unit would return them to winning ways, Brown told Sky Sports F1:Through the years, but I think that it is not energy unit that is keeping us back from winning races at the moment, I think its ourselves.
I really dont think we are yet ready to win – it is one step at a time. We are having a fantastic year and we just need to continue taking steps forward.
In Formula 1 everything is about small incremental gains, but I think that its not quite as simple as placing a different engine and were back to front. Weve got a lot more work ahead of us than just changing engines.
Brown added:The chassis is pretty great but I dont think its as great as the three groups facing us, quite frankly. We know where it has a few weak spots on track.
Weve got a new wind tunnel arriving and I think were behind in some aerodynamic development, partly because we do not have our own wind tunnel that is state of their art. With Formula 1 its all a little bit anywhere as opposed to a area, so I think were making good progress.
If you take a look in Mercedes, before they ruled they won a race and then you build momentum, so were just in a momentum-building mode right now.
A race was last won by a 20 world championship titles champions in 2012 however their current fourth-place from the constructors championship is their highest placing since that year.
And Brown thinks the current world champions of F1 can be eventually challenged by them .
I am very convinced that Mercedes supplies all the telemetry so that its clear what is in the Mercedes grand prix car is exactly the same that is in the Williams and also the Dominion Point cars, explained Brown to reporters.
When we do an excellent job with our staff, execute, drivers do a good job, then I believe we can. But youre going to need to be in your own A-game.
And Mercedes boss Toto Wolff stated:If you find the guys that Im at interacting – Andreas [Seidl], James Key or Zak – you can see theyre energised and they want to return to wherever McLaren deserves to be. We are up for the challenge
When are McLaren switching to Mercedes engines?
From 2021, McLaren will operate Mercedes hybrid power unit after one year powered by Renault at 2020.
Just how long is the bargain for?
The agreement is for a span of four seasons before 2024.
Why are McLaren going back to Mercedes?
McLaren believe that while their time with Renault because 2018 hasgiven us lots of power and their motor continues to enhance amid the Woking outfits rise back up the grid, Mercedes can take them to the next level.
We want to continue further up the grid and, quite simply, Mercedes has become the benchmark electricity unit during this hybrid era, explained Brown. The rules will not actually change much [about the 2021 motor ] so we are putting our bets we believe that is going to be the power unit to have.
Were any other routes considered by them?
Brown claims the prospect of approaching Ferrari, that possess 2019s standout engine, was never believed – pointing to aclear brand battle between both manufacturers of supercars – while the idea of building their own in-house powe unit isnt considered viable.
Can not Mercedes deny a McLaren approach before?
An agreement was not reached, although in 2017, since Honda and McLaren ready to part company, discussions were held between the former partners.
Back in the afternoon Niki [Lauda] and I used to have large discussions around whether we needed to provide different teams or concentrate on our own circumstance, Wolff told Sky F1. Ever since then times have changed a little bit. We believe that the learning curve is fraught with more engines out there. You saw that we had any failures on Kubicas automobile in Spa and Perezs auto in Monza and thats a portion of the learning procedure.
It is a money topic also – yet another customer means greater cash flow for Daimler total – and we are up for this challenge. McLaren is a fantastic team and a good set of people, but lets go [for it].
What exactly does it mean to Mercedes teams future?
Nothingand motor distribution agreements, according to Wolff, with the involvement for a team owner beyond 2020s future not connected together.
One isnt connected to the other, Wolff told Sky F1. I think we have got to see Formula 1 develops and were in an essential time now to observe where the regs move along with how it stands out. It is a different subject to supplying customers, which can be a standalone choice .
Wolff also stated in Sochi:The [McLaren] relationship is pretty strong due to these times [1995-2014] but for us it was important to make clear that there is a works team today and this is a client power unit relationship, rather than the beginning of a works bargain and us not being there anymore.
What today for Renault?
As it stands, Renault team will be the one conducting the makers engine 2021, whereas competitions Mercedes, Honda and Ferrari will have two teams on their novels.
But thats not necessarily an issue depending on their team chief Cyril Abiteboul. Studying the regulations, when the effort of standardisation, simplification, aero guidelines, go forward we feel that the two significant performance differentiators would be engine, and engine optimisation and setup, the Frenchman told Sky Sports in the Russian GP.
In this regard, frankly its far much better to be lonely and to keep for us exactly what were growing. We have got some beliefs in what were developing and, frankly, if it is a fantastic secret I would rather keep it for myself.
