Ahead of the real Hundred Publish comes the one!
For a little bit of fun, we now billed Rob Key, Ian Ward, Nasser Hussain and Isa Guha – each one of whom are part of our coverage of this Hundred Draft on Sunday night – to make their selections.
Thirteen areas were up for grabs, with the likes of David Warner Chris Gayle, Kagiso Rabada, Andre Russell and Rashid Khan vying for choice and a trendy #125k – but that way did our pundits go?
Learn below and watch the Hundred Draft appropriate, live on Sky Sports from 7pm on Sunday night…
(NB:’ Pre-selected’neighborhood pub’ players listed in bold)
Rob Key: Andre Russell (West Indies, all-rounder):
“You need absolute value along together with your overseas selections. The Hundred will be about setting it from the park, bowling well in the top and bowling tightly at the death – and Russell does all three.”
Ian Ward: Rashid Khan (Afghanistan, spinner)
“He is the No 1 pick, full stop. Like Kyler Murray in the 2019 NFL Draft; he is the standout player.”
Isa Guha: Rashid Khan
“He’s the MVP, in my view. Mystery twist, so significant in white-ball cricket, I’d be considering Russell – a – but Rashid is just too great to pass up.
Nasser Hussain: Rashid Khan
“He is the ideal white-ball, franchise spin bowler and I have got two fine batsmen at Joe Root and Alex Hales, along with a left-armer in Harry Gurney already.”
RK: Rashid Khan
“He’s a mystery spinner and proven wicket-taker – among the very successful short-form bowlers on earth.”
NH: Andre Russell
“I am not going to squander my 125k on anyone that’s not proven quality and Russell ticks all the boxes.”
IW: Andre Russell
“Russell supplies death-bowling plus he whacks it miles with the bat. Add him to Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan there, it’s one hell of a pace trio! That is 60 deliveries of the 100 accounted for already.”
IG: Andre Russell
“With Rashid off the board, the Brave will go for Russell. Super destructive, together with tongue and ball.
IW: David Warner (Australia, opening batsman)
“You’ve already got the wrist-spin of Adil Rashid, the left-arm of David Willey, therefore let’s get a batsman on the market. Warner is the very finest available and ends up linking up with [mentor ] Darren Lehmann again.”
NH: David Warner
“I believe they want an opening batsman and also Darren Lehman in the helm, Warner’s strong ball-striking leaves him a standout pick. I would also make him captain, based on the way he led Sunrisers Hyderabad and in the T20 Tri-nations for Australia.”
IG: Mitchell Starc (Australia, left-arm pace)
“I was deliberating over choosing a top-order batsman here, possibly Chris Lynn, however, the left-arm pace of Starc is simply too precious.”
RK: Mitchell Starc
“He is not merely the ideal passing bowler in the world but he bites in the top; the one thing he doesn’t possess on Russell is the batting.”
RK: Sunil Narine (West Indies, spinner)
“I sort of get what domestic cricket doesn’t need to provide; there are a lot of great batsmen in cricket, do not get me wrong, but there are not puzzle spinners such as Narine which is the reason why I opt for them . Plus, he can whack it”
NH: Mitchell Starc
“That is simple in the sense that they obviously need a bowler, together using Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton and Colin Ingram currently in both side. Starc is crushing on his day. A genuine match-winner.”
IW: Mitchell Starc
“The Fire need bowlers; they might examine the mystery spin of Sunil Narine here. Starc is out there. It only depends upon which order they move.”
IG: Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka, rate bowler)
“In case Starc is off the plank, I think the Fire will opt for Malinga. They have got three batsmen already; they need a bowler, and he’s quality – particularly at the passing, bowling his yorkers.”
RK: Kagiso Rabada (South Africa, right-arm speed )
“Let’s assume he’s about, as opposed to playing South Africa. His additional pace leaves him a fantastic wicket-taker at the very top and a hazard in the death. I’ve always believed the game is all about bowling.”
IW: Aaron Finch (Australia, opening batsman)
“Finch along with Jason Roy starting the batting in The Oval, thanks very much. Superior chance bowling at both!”
NH: Aaron Finch
“Finch seems a natural match, given his connection to the Oval and the opportunity to join with fellow Aussie Tom Moody. Finch and roy know every other nicely – it is a dynamic combination that is good up front.
IG: David Warner
“The natural choice will be Finch, because he’s been at Surrey and understands exactly the Oval well. But, I think as Tom Moody is coach, he will go with Warner – they’ve spent a great deal of time in the IPL with Sunrisers.”
NH: Kieron Pollard (West Indies, all-rounder)
“He’s a high quality franchise cricketer with a demonstrated track record. I’d prefer an opening batsman but with Warner and Finch gone, I could go Gayle – but Pollard gets the nod as I think he’d win more games right now.”
IW: Sunil Narine
“Everything you want from your overseas picks is what’s less-widely available in domestic cricket. So, mystery spin. He can whack it if you would like a pinch-hitter near the peak of the order. It’s no surprise to me that Matt Parkinson is currently with Manchester; you need two spinners at Old Trafford, even a larger floor.”
IG: Sunil Narine
“Head coach Simon Katich and spin-bowling trainer Carl Crowe have both worked with Narine previously with all the Kolkata Knight Riders.”
RK: David Warner
“They’ve got their spinner at Matt Parkinson, therefore I am seeking to the top of the order. An batsman who offers more at the peak of the sequence than a person like Chris Gayle. I think this match will be about volatile cricketers.”
IG: D’Arcy Short (Australia, opening batsman)
“This is a difficult one. Together with Eoin Morgan slated in as their’local icon’ player at No 10, they do not get another pick. They desire a passing bowler and a hard-hitting allrounder but, I understand that [trainer ] Shane Warne is a huge fan of Short, so I think that is who they opt for.”
NH: D’Arcy Short
“I think Shane Warne is going to be funky throughout this process. They are brief at the peak of the purchase and Shane enjoys Short; Short isn’t at the bracket bracket but Shane will not wish to miss out on him.”
IW: Lasith Malinga
“D’Arcy Short is somebody they may be eyeing up however, with batsmen already in their group, you’re going to need a bowler, particularly a passing bowler, therefore Malinga is the choice.”
RK: Lasith Malinga
“There aren’t many domestic cricketers who could have faced Malinga, so there is still more than a place of puzzle in his armoury. That said I’d be worried about his fitness.”
NH: Babar Azam (Pakistan, opening batsman)
“Andrew McDonald would like Finch, but I have already chosen him. With Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali and Pat Brown already inked in, they need batsmen. His availability worries me but I am pleased to have a punt on the No 1 T20 batsman on the planet.”
IW: Babar Azam
“I’m going to pick the No 1 ranked T20 batsman on earth at this time, Babar, to start to your Phoenix. There’s lots of Pakistani cricket followers at the Birmingham region, so that’s a great fit.”
RK: Mohammad Amir (Pakistan, left-arm quickly )
“Guaranteed to be accessible today he’s retired from Test cricket, his left-arm pace will prove a hazard.”
IG: Aaron Finch
“Finch remains on the table plus a natural match to satisfy one of those opening spots at Edgbaston.”
RK: Glenn Maxwell (Australia, all-rounder)
“They’ve got two good bowlers already in Parkinson and Saqib Mahmood; I visit Maxwell as a hitter but in addition a’bowl me a few’ bowler and rifle fielder. He is in the heat of the game.”
IW: Glenn Maxwell
“Maxwell has played at Old Trafford for Lancashire. That’s a slight advantage, exactly like with Finch in The Oval – he will know the area, conditions, and sit in the identical place from the dressing room.”
IG: Chris Lynn (Australia, opening batsman)
“I was looking at Maxwell or even Shane Watson, however, I have Lynn teaming up using Narine [Manchester’s potential earlier pick] at the top of the sequence, exactly like in Kolkata.”
NH: Chris Gayle (West Indies, starting batsman)
“I am a little worried that his kind may have tailed off of late night – will he come off enough times to win you sufficient games? However, you can’t doubt his track record.”
RK: AJ Tye (Australia, right-arm quickly )
“He’s down the order a little bit but I feel that the risk in this draft is that you just get fixated with all the top-brand players, whereas I believe half the challenge of this is getting strength during your squad. Tye is among the better death bowlers in the world so I would pick him up earlier instead of later.”
IW: Kieron Pollard
“Pollard. Hard-hitting allrounder, whacking the ball over those boundaries down . Best of luck!”
IG: Mohammad Amir
“Another big choice, since the Fire do not possess a second-round selection, what with Colin Ingram and Tom Banton already lurks in their squad. I am tempted by Maxwell back, but I think that they’ll go for another high quality bowler plus a left-arm alternative in Amir.”
NH: Glenn Maxwell
“I need to bulk from the middle-order – I really don’t want to end up like Royal Challengers Bangalore and also have high guns at the very top but be a little lightweight further down. Maxwell hits well down the ground so should succeed at Cardiff with the shorter right boundaries.”
RK: Shane Watson (Australia, opening batsman)
“He has been written off time and time again but he is a proven winner in T20 cricket using the Chennai Super Kings; I think he will be a big trier – you need someone with something to prove. He’s also quite good at turning and delivering although not playing a lot”
IW: Sandeep Lamichhane (Nepal, spinner)
“I’m presuming Lamichhane here, yet another mystery spinner to bowl in tandem with Adil for the Superchargers.”
IG: Glenn Maxwell
“Lehmann sticking together with the Aussies; they’ve then got a legspin option in Adil and offspin out of Maxwell.”
NH: Kagiso Rabada
“With Warner, Stokes, Rashid and Willey secured in I believe I’m going to need a opening bowler. The only question with Rabada is how much he may be available next summer.”
RK: Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan, right-arm twist )
“Jofra Archer might not perform much – however they’ve James Vince and Chris Jordan. Mujeeb provides a tiny bit of puzzle and he understands the ground nicely, also, having played previously at the Ageas Bowl.”
NH: Mujeeb Ur Rahman
“I require a spinner – and also a puzzle spinner too. Mujeeb is priced competitively and I would back him to win with me a few games.”
IW: Trent Boult (New Zealand, left-arm pace)
“Left-armer. They could select for Amir, but I just like Boult like a cricketer.”
IG: Kieron Pollard
“I believe [trainer ] Mahela Jayawardena may opt for Pollard with this pick, with their IPL connection using the Mumbai Indians. Plus, Pollard joining Russell from the middle-order is a fairly devastating combination!”
RK: Quinton de Kock (South Africa, wicketkeeper-batsman)
“I need my abroad to offer more than just batting. I always think that in short-form batting your own batsmen are hit-or-miss the ones you’re the bowlers, all-rounders and wicketkeepers would finally have an effect in each and every game. De Kock balances the group by having the capability to open and maintain.”
IW: Chris Gayle
“Gayle! Opening the batting Alex Hales, using this brief boundary one side at Trent Bridge.”
IG: Chris Gayle
“I’m enticed by Dwayne Bravo, linking up with his Chennai Super Kings trainer Stephen Fleming. However, they can always get him with the first pick of the second round, so I am going for Gayle also before he is no longer offered.”
NH: Sunil Narine
“Ideally, I need a batsman to open with Hales. I’m actually going to go with Narine as he can open the batting and offers you a twist choice too.”
