Arsenal’s summertime overhaul concluded completing a season-long loan transfer to Roma.
The Armenian became among 25 players to depart the Emirates Stadium either or through the summer, and it’s a move that sums up the new strategy to squad-building of the club.
Arsenal not simply lower their wage bill but also free up playing opportunities for young academy graduates like Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson by moving to the 30-year-old Mkhitaryan.
We take a look at how Arsenal have transformed the personnel and profile of the team at the club during a summer of radical change.
At the end of May, we asked Sky Sports readers which they’d sell ahead of the summer season and which Arsenal players they’d keep.
The poll showed 11 players the fans needed to depart, together with Calum Chambers, Nacho Monreal, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Carl Jenkinson, David Ospina, Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Mohamed Elneny, Granit Xhaka, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil all voted out.
Three months , and also seven of these 11 names have departed at a busy summer which has observed a total of over two dozen players leave the club on a permanent or temporary basis. The amount may be higher had Arsenal managed to discover suitors for Mustafi – and publicly advised to leave by Emery – and Ozil.
Arsenal were occupied in terms of incomings as well, breaking up their transfer record to signal the 72m Nicolas Pepe out of Lille while also paying large sums for left-back Kieran Tierney and 18-year-old central defender William Saliba, that went directly back to St Etienne on loan for the season.
Pepe has featured prominently at the opening weeks of the season, providing the aid for Alexandre Lacazette’s goal in Sunday’s north London derby, and while Tierney is still recovering from an accident, there have also been debuts to David Luiz, loanee Dani Ceballos and Brazilian youngster Gabriel Martinelli. The turnover of gamers at the Emirates Stadium was fast, not this summer but over the past couple of years. Really, the extent of the change becomes clear when looking back in Arsenal squad for their 2017 FA Cup win over Chelsea – significantly less than two-and-a-half years ago.
Arsenal have proceeded on 14 of those 18 players, Also as having another manager from the dugout, with Unai Emery set up of Arsene Wenger.
The survivors are Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin, Xhaka along with Ozil.
Monreal’s departure to Real Sociedad signifies the longest-serving senior player of Arsenal is now Ozil, who combined them in 2013. A move never came into fruition, although the future of the playmaker was in the summer. And yet, regardless of his experience, he’s still waiting using Emery favouring younger choices.
1 conclusion from the summertime of Arsenal is that they have put youth over experience.
Back in Koscielny, Lichtsteiner, Mkhitaryan, Ospina and Monreal, they have sold or released five players over the age of 30. Even the David Luiz did arrive from Chelsea, but the only players in the squad aged 30 or over are Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Otherwise, the group has a young feel. With the exclusion of Luiz, their summer signings had a mean age of 21. There’s also a crop of academy graduates competing for a location. Although Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe are currently still waiting in line, also, this season has impressed.
It was the first time since February 1998 when Arsenal had appointed two teenagers in their when Nelson and Willock started on the coming weekend of the new year.
The change was just as striking behind the scenes. Where once there was a manager in Wenger, now is a whole team set up to care for things that are off-field, permitting head trainer Emery to focus solely on what happens on the pitch and creating Arsenal more efficient on the market.
Raul Sanllehi has mastered the summer industry in his job as head of football, with assistance from executive Vinai Venkatesham as well as technical manager Edu. The Brazilian was appointed in July following the departure of former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat this season.
The hope now is that Arsenal have most of the pieces in place to keep them moving in the right direction for the long-term. Their attempts to construct up the side have only just started.
Expect change.
