Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev attained his maiden Grand Slam semi-final in the US Open following the Russian downed 2016 winner Stan Wawrinka.
Medvedev continued to enjoy his role as the protagonist of the tournament by knocking out Wawrinka on Arthur Ashe 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 6-1 on Tuesday.
The Russian, who made a stir by sticking his middle finger up at the crowd in a’observable obscenity’ before in the competition, received a round of applause for his operation and he will now meet with up with the winner of this game involving five-time champion Roger Federer and unseeded Grigor Dimitrov.
Medvedev had his left leg treated in the first set but played to become the youngest semi-finalist at New York because Novak Djokovic at 2010.
The 23-year-old struck 11 aces, 35 champions and won four of eight split points as he wrapped up the win in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
The 23-year-old’s goading of this crowd within his on-court interviews was a characteristic of this tournament, and he concluded that his latest by saying:”So many men and women encourage me, so a lot of don’t like me personally.
“I can just say, I try to be myself men. I must say, sorry guys, and thank you!”
Medvedev earlier clarified his injury issues.
He explained:”The match was really strange. I had big pain in my quadriceps and that I didn’t feel I could continue at the set.
“I’m really strange about this match but I’m pleased to be in my initial major semi-final.
“Before the match I was feeling perfect, and all these tapes were for more protection.
“In the first game of the match I pulled on my quadriceps. I took a painkiller and by the fourth set I was feeling normal.
“I will find out how I’m in the morning and also try my best to be fit for the semis.”
