Rory McIlroy celebrated being named PGA Tour Player of Year for the third period, but he’s already planning for next year’s Masters.
When he had been presented by Jack Nicklaus himself, after topping the votes from his PGA Tour pros ahead of world # 1 Brooks Koepka mcIlroy was surprised.
The 30-year-old seized the PGA Tour’s flagship event, The Players Championship, for the first time at March, and he finished the year with a victory at also a 15m bonus, and the Tour Championship that brought him his second FedExCup name.
But after yet a frustrating season at the majors, McIlroy has left winning his # 1 priority after again as he seems to atone for a number of near-misses at Augusta National to the Masters and is planning to put that right into 2020.
Talking to Sky Sports News, here is what McIlroy needed to say on his desire to win the Green Jacket, the esteem he needs for Koepka, the controversial new key schedule and a lot more…
I would give quite a lot [to acquire it]! It is the one left for me. I have been really fortunate and lucky enough to win anything else there is to win in golfing, so that’s the last piece in the puzzle.
After a year like I’ve had that I’m more prepared than ever to go and attempt to maintain it and acquire it, I’m. Each single time you return you get more and more comfortable, so next year is the year.
I feel like I am confident enough which I’ll have a chance .
I voted for Brooks to triumph. I thought it was fairly tight. Brooks won yet another major, had an unbelievable year and played superbly.
He beat me Memphis convincingly in July and then I made him back in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. I believed it was going to be tight and I did not know if the major he won was about to sway the vote one way or the other.
It’s nice you come out on the surface and once you’re voted on by your peers, it’s a great feeling.
It is always great to get a win under your belt and that’s this year’s first tournament. It’s a place that I’ve fought at for a little while and I think that the move back to March supposed that the class played with me favourably.
Driver could be hit on by me might be a bit more competitive and it was a terrific spot. That obviously put me up for what’s been a fantastic season.
It’s how it is and it felt very bunched together for quite a bit of us, although we are all creatures of habit. We do not create the schedules and we are told in which to play, so you have to be ready to perform .
I believed it worked nicely. I think people still had enough time to get ready for every event. It keeps folks a little bit more interested, particularly on this aspect of the pond with the FedExCup finish a little sooner.
It’s an adjustment for everyone, but I believe by the time next year comes around I don’t think you will hear discussion about the program.
It is not the first time I’ve obtained a bit and at this point I perform for this, but at precisely exactly the same time you require time off to reflect and recharge the batteries.
I am heading into Wentworth on Sunday then play the Dunhill Links Championship per week afterwards, then I also have three weeks off before heading to Asia and get back to Florida.
I will play in Japan and China and I’ll head to Dubai, so I have still got quite a bit of travel coming up, but then after that I think I’m going to take eight months off to relax and reflect on what’s been a fantastic year and attempt to get back myself up again for 2020.
I think that is all I could ask and if I look back in other years in which I have had success, whether that be 2012 or 2014, I feel as if I’m a much better golfer than I was for.
I feel like I have improved, I feel as if I’ve learnt a couple of things about my sport and that gives me a great deal of confidence moving forward.
Since pro turned to now, it has been a stretch for me, I have been on an amazing journey and I feel as though I’m not even at the halfway stage nonetheless. I’ve got.
