First-ever playoff meeting between the businesses.
Houston headed baseball with 107 wins this regular season but lost four vs. Tampa Bay; the Astros were 2-1 in house when they last played Aug. 27-29. The teams opened the 2019 season against one another in St. Petersburg, therefore difficult to take much out of that.
The Rays hit .255 with eight home runs. Avisail Garcia, who went yard was 7-for-19 using a double. Willy Adames struck .333 with a homer and three RBIs. Diaz was .308 but played in only three games. Ji-Man Choi was first 5-for-18 with 2 homers and five RBIs. Austin Meadows, who headed Tampa hit just .148.
Houston hit .266 vs. Rays pitching with 12 homers. Rookie sensation Yordan Alvarez has been 4-for-11 with four RBIs, two homers and six runs in the three games he playedwith. Alex Bregman has been 8-for-29 with 2 doubles and a homer. Jose Altuve struck .241 with 2 homers.
1 major injury note this is that Astros shortstop Carlos Correa will perform in Game 1 after finishing the seasons previous week due to a sore backagain.
Tampa Bays ace is Charlie Morton, that rejuvenated his career the past two seasons with the Astros. Morton won the Wild-Card match in Oakland by allowing one run and five hits. He wont currently be prepared until Game 3 of the series once it changes to Florida.
Itll Be likely AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander of Houston vs. Tyler Glasnow at Game 1. Verlander (21-6, 2.58 ERA) led the majors in wins and has been first in the AL in innings (233) and WHIP (0.80) while ranking second in strikeouts (300) and ERA. He has lots of playoff experience. Glasnow (6-1, 1.78) has none. He made only 12 starts this season because of trauma; Glasnow just returned early September and didnt go over 4.1 innings in four begins. He is unlikely to go deep — the Rays have a great bullpen and manager Kevin Cash isnt afraid to pull his starters (except possibly Morton) quite ancient.
Game 2 includes yet another AL Cy Young offender in Gerrit Cole (20-5, 2.50) vs. 2018 Cy Young winner along with lefty Blake Snell (6-8, 4.29) of the Rays. Snell missed about two weeks due to accidents and made just three September looks at six innings. He wont be going deep.
Game 3 features midseason trade acquisition and former AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke (18-5, 2.93) against Morton.
Houston has the starting pitching advantage that is huge, but also the Rays do not utilize their rotation . Tampa Bays bullpen is going to need to be untouchable for the Rays to possess any chance. We just dont see it.
