England head coach Eddie Jones was correct to include injured prop Mako Vunipola in his World Cup squad, according to Will Greenwood.
While Jack Nowell recently required emergency surgery to remove his appendix vunipola suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury during the month’s 57-15 triumph over Ireland.
In the 31-man group to the championship of England center, the set were included Regardless of the lack of fitness and Greenwood insists that they deserved to travel to Japan.
“There are certain players who you have just got to move’get to the airplane’ whether you’ve got a knock or perhaps not,” Greenwood told Sky Sports News.
“Very infrequently after four warm-up games so near a World Cup are going to have all 31 players 100 percent fit ready to compete.
“You do not need to exclude somebody from the opportunity of moving due to a slight hamstring niggle.”
The build-up into the World Cup of england included matches from Wales, Ireland and Italy and also Greenwood is confident those Test matches will have provided adequate preparation for the tournament.
“Should you move and possess Test matches against New Zealand and South Africa you may wind up with ten men in Japan with accidents,” said Greenwood.
“So there’s always must be a balance involving an intensive physical and mental test but at the same time you don’t want to sacrifice any players around the altar of 1 per cent,” he explained.
“It’s that trade-off between needing to be physically match fit but we want everyone available for choice and rugby presents that dilemma.”
Danny Care was not chosen despite being fit, together with New Zealand-born Willi Heinz.
Care has questioned the rules surrounding selection while, from 2020, players might have to live in a state for five decades before representing that nation.
Greenwood knows why Care feels aggrieved but believes Jones must select the most powerful squad potential.
“People will say well’is it rewarding English talent?’ But Eddie Jones’s job will be to win the World Cup not necessarily nurture English gift,” he said.
“I believe they’ve made big strides in extending it [residency] to five decades. I really don’t think it’s daft for this individual to be permitted to reflect that country.”
