We look at other sporting comebacks, after Kim Clijsters announced her return 2020.
Clijsters, who turned pro in 1997, has stepped away from the sport twice retiring in 2007 due to persistent injury troubles.
Clijsters returned in 2009, relying on wildcards to regain her position. The Belgian swiftly recovered by defeating Caroline Wozniacki at 2009, the US Open title she had won in 2005.
The next year, prior to adding an Australian Open success for her CV clijsters then successfully defended the title in 2010. There was A second retirement announced this time owing to family obligations as Clijsters didn’t wish to carry on to trip while her daughter began college, in 2012.
After a hiatus along with the arrival of her two sons, Clijsters has declared her return to the sport in 2020 and began training.
Clijsters is not the first superstar to generate a sporting comeback…
Widely regarded as the NBA’s best player of all time, Jordan hung up his shoes in 1993 to give a try to league baseball. But he returned to the Chicago Bulls 2 decades later to pick up where he left off. He led the Bulls to three straight titles between 1998 and 1996. Jockey Piggott announced his retirement in 1985 having ridden over 4,000 winners. Seles won eight Grand Slam singles titles and became the youngest woman to make it to the world No 1 position in 1991. Yugoslavian-born Seles dominated the game winning three of four Grand Slam singles titles in 1992 with successes in the Open. Back in April 1993, Seles was stabbed by a deranged spectator while playing at a tournament in Hamburg. She wouldn’t play again for a couple of years Though she recovered from her injuries. Austrian Formula One driver Lauda returned into racing 42 days after suffering burns in an accident in the German Grand Prix at 1976. Before retiring in the game in 1979, he claimed another domain in 1977 with Ferrari. Lauda won his third race returned with McLaren three decades later and captured his third world title. Earlier this year, he passed away at age 70.
Once he won the 2019 Masters at 16, woods ended an 11-year wait. Back in April 2017he informed Jack Nicklaus”I’m done” through the Champions Dinner at Augusta National, and he flew directly into London to see the consultant who suggested that he undergo spinal fusion operation.
