England will not be deterred from taking Jack Nowell into the World Cup despite the most recent setback that forced the Exeter wing to undergo emergency operation.
Nowell run of luck continued on arrival at the team’s training camp at north-east Italy Wednesday, when abdominal pain saw him admitted to a local hospital.
That identical day his appendix was removed and it was not until four nights later that he had been released to continue his recovery kilograms lighter and with a ferocious appetite.
This was the latest twist in a story of woe which has prevented him from taking part in the three World Cup warm-up games staged so far.
An ankle injury sustained through the Gallagher Premiership closing on June 2 led to surgery and, after having a drawback during his rehabilitation, Exeter boss Rob Baxter announced he is”touch and go” to be ready for Japan.
However, England have indicated he will travel that, at that time that the Pool C games against Argentina and France have been all staged, he will be healthy and in full fitness.
As his blockbusting performance in the final indicated, Nowell is a flexible back-three participant who breaks tackles. If fit, he’s a certainty for Eddie Jones’ matchday 23.
“Jack’s already been’gutsing’ it a little. He’s a fantastic character, a resilient bugger and not a lot down him. But he’s nice and hungry!” Defence coach John Mitchell said.
“He’s in our World Cup squad. We are going to be backing Jack. We’re no different to a lot of squads. Everybody’s got niggles and bits and bits. You have got to reunite and encourage that risk.
“There’s always risk. We have got to back our instincts, our instinct and our own approaches rather than falling into the trap of being hasty.
“At this point in time we again Jack and we are going to encourage him to reach there. We wouldn’t be doing exactly what we’re doing we believed that is how he’s heading.”
Talking at England’s World Cup team announcement , Nowell demonstrated have taken a psychological toll.
“Within the last couple of years if I’m honest I’ve really, really struggled with my mishaps,” Nowell said.
“Normally I’m pretty positive and will find something to operate on, but I have actually struggled.
“You feel a little which you are letting them down you can’t stand out there all the time.
“You play because you would like to play each and every game to be told, or to your entire body to tell you that you can not play is the most frustrating thing.
“After I tore my hamstring in training in the autumn international I didn’t actually think it.
“The physios were telling me how and the scans were telling me however, it was actually killing me to be informed I would be out for six or seven weeks. I had been in denial.”
Nowell’s Exeter team-mate Henry Slade seems unlikely to play against Italy because he continues his comeback from a knee injury.
Slade has also missed the double-header against Wales along with rout of Ireland to face him with the prospect of entering the World Cup without a minute of game time in the bank because the closing on June 1.
After recovering from a hamstring injury wing Ruaridh McConnochie is expected to make his debut against Italy.
