Former England captain Dylan Hartley admits his omission from Eddie Jones’ World Cup squad remains causing him to have.
The Northampton hooker was left from the 31-man squad for the championship of England, having failed to defeat.
Hartley, who has 97 caps for England, it is coming to terms with being denied the opportunity, and had hoped to bow out of international rugby to get a top in Japan.
“After the World Cup team was announced, it was almost like I had died – friends getting in touch and seeing whether I was OK,” Hartley said.
“Ultimately, the way I looked in my whole Xmas career and how I needed it to flake out, and also the way it was likely was that this would have been the ultimate send-off, the fantasy conclusion into an international career.
“The reality is that you pick up an injury.
“For 3 years we’ve talked about winning the World Cup together with Eddie, and I’ve headed that group, been a part of that journey, in order to fall at the final hurdle… I don’t know the feeling.
“I wake up many nights thinking about it. It doesn’t sit well with me personally, but I have come to terms with it. You have to crack on.”
Hartley believes England have an excellent probability of being the team which lifts the Webb Ellis Cup in Yokohama City on November 2, which his omission to deal with.
“I genuinely think England (will win), they’ve got as good a opportunity to go and do it,” he said.
“The worst thing for me would be to believe if my leg was not [injured] at the minute I could be there with themwinning a World Cup. It is difficult to swallow.
“I hope they go and win. I’ll get on and be a glory supporter – recall me guys?
“I will be hanging off the face of the open-top bus, within my 97th (look ) shirt”
As representing club side Northampton in a Gallagher Premiership clash with Worcester nine months 25, hartley hasn’t featured at any degree of rugby.
The 33-year-old admits his knee injury aggravated by trying to rush back to the World Cup.
“I tried an (initial) approach along with my knee, a very aggressive strategy, since I had been given some deadlines to meet, along with the competitive approach did not work,” said Hartley.
“I ended up in a worse position for attempting to come back too early. Ever since that happened, I knew I wasn’t going to create the (World Cup) deadline.
“It was about the onset of the camps, even when they first got together around the beginning of July. I tried return for this and essentially put myself at a tiny hole emotionally and physically.”
Hartley recently spent a fortnight in Philadelphia working with strength and conditioning pro Bill Knowles, whose previous clients believes that treatment was valuable, also include Andy Murray.
“Everybody asks whenever you are coming back but I have learned that you do not place a time period on itbecause when you are 10 days out from it and you realize you are nowhere near, you are able to play these games in your head and it is tough,” Hartley additional.
“At the present time, I’m constructing my tolerance to have the ability to run every day and participate every day.”
