Scotland hopes of earning automatic eligibility for Euro 2020 dangle by a thread after Russia came from behind to win at Hampden.
John McGinn gave Steve Clarke’s side the guide, but poor defending allowed before Stephen O’Donnell’s own purpose put Russia ahead Artem Dzyuba to strike.
Scotland sit six points adrift of the Russians in fourth with five matches to play and the two qualifying.
They sponsor Belgium, the top ranked team in the planet, at Glasgow on Monday.
With a semi-final place secured, Scotland’s qualification hopes will rest barring an unlikely sequence of results.
This is the first competitive home defeat since then-world champions of the country Germany triumphed.
Scotland could have lost with the Russians hitting the woodwork twice and having an effort and faded.
It began about the attack with Scotland and ended with Scotland on the assault – it had been the piece.
Prior to the last whistle you lost count of the number of days Scotland gave the ball away and made their lifetimes murderously difficult in the process. Long prior to the final whistle you lost count of the number of chances Russia neglected to take in their pursuit of a game-clinching third objective.
In the last reckoning, they did not need that third. Two did the job. Two was sufficient to kill off. Following the boon of goal, Scotland outclassed and were completely outplayed.
There was expectation. Considering that the jolt that descended on the centre-halves of Scotland – of these going down, four injured from the build-up into this qualifier – there was a debut awarded to Leeds United captain Liam Cooper.
In the opposite end, Clarke proceeded with Oli McBurnie, a participant who turned with the intensity of a man who had a lot to prove, that is exactly what what he is, regardless of the eye-watering amount that Sheffield United splashed him out in the summertime.
McBurnie had seemed unthreatening and leaden but he played with with a large part in what had been a quick start by Scotland. Even before the opening target they’d caused Russia a hassle, Stephen O.Donnell hooking an attempt on goal from close range just for Guilherme to get his body in the best way to obstruct it.
The goal came in the 11th minute and the place still left a fair racket once McGinn scored though Hampden had enormous unoccupied sections. Maybe it all began with a rescue from Ryan Fraser, his crossover has been spilled by Guilherme and dropping from the abandoned.
Guilherme was definitely unnerved by McBurnie’s presence when the ball was in the atmosphere from Fraser, the striker neglecting to make contact but succeeding in deflecting the goalkeeper. McBurnie looked effective and hungry .
It was a start from the Scots, but as the half wore on the Russia came into it. A hesitancy and stress from the house team aided them. Energy and that precision they had vanished. They could not keep the ballcouldn’t bring any composure for their play. Pass that was misplaced followed misplaced pass. Trouble was on its way.
It came when Scotland put strain on themselves and gave possession away. To add to the error count,” it was unintentionally helped by Robertson to Dzyuba In attempting to clear the ball from Aleksandr Golovin.
The striker using the prolific album had time and space he needed to knock his shot. This was his goal in 37 games for his nation. What Scotland would provide to get a target machine such as the Zenit lighthouse.
Russia took complete control of it then, helped along their way from Scotland inability to hold on to the ball. The amount of times that they lost it and shipped Russia was notable.
Early in the second half that they started to the target of pepper Scotland. Charlie Mulgrew needed to charge a piledriver from Golovin down. Two minutes later, Golovin broke free but sliced his shot wide. Scotland’s wastefulness was asking to be punished, it practically begged for it.
Over the flip side they got what was coming. This time it was. Aleksei Ionov picked it up, played a chunk that was gorgeous in behind Cooper into Golovin who squared it Yuri Zhirkov.
The Russian obtained the first touch, but O’Donnell sliding to avert risk, got the last touch. Whoever is credited with the aim hardly matters. Russia had the lead and they never really looked just like giving this up despite a late flurry from the Scots.
The miracle was that they did not add to it. Mario Fernandes forced a save from Marshall,” Magomed Ozdoev shot struck a pole, Zhirkov’s campaign had to be pushed off by the Scotland goalkeeper in a different Russian tide.
Scotland pushed hard for an equaliser but didn’t get it and didn’t deserve to get it. Belgium night, next on Monday. Life doesn’t get any simpler for Clarke along with his or her players.
Aleksandr Golovin ran. He was on a level to anyone in gloomy, picking up balls buzzing about and also with his intelligence and vision to induce Scotland no end of dread. A participant.
More to follow.
