Watford captain Troy Deeney has praised Raheem Sterling for the way he says he’s become a role model for young folks also has handled abuse.
Sterling has become the topic of racist abuse sometimes during his career and has been supposedly targeted again at Wembley on Saturday during England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man was detained on suspicion of a public order offence however following enquiriesthat he was released with no further action.
When asked when racism has increased in the last few decades, Deeney told Sky Sports:”The question is, did it ever go away? That would be the biggest question.
“I believe we are living in a time where we could emphasize it so much simpler. We can highlight it with websites and Raheem has been the face and talking purpose for all.
“The best thing he’s done is come out and spoken about it and that for most young children coming up now ought to be the mantra of things to do. If you find an issue, speak about it.”
Back in April, Deeney said he and his family were subjected to racist abuse on interpersonal websites after Watford’s FA Cup success against Wolves.
The Watford striker reacted by disabling comments on his Instagram account after he obtained what he claims were abusive messages out of”small-minded people”, and he expects social media firms are finally starting to take notice.
“Obviously you have to begin with social networking because it is so powerful today,” Deeney said.
“Hopefully Twitter, Instagram and these sorts of social media platforms may find an understanding of what it’s like from a participant’s perspective and a standard individual on the street, because we are nearly in 2020 and they shouldn’t be affected that.
“We must keep working and keep doing everything we can to move this world ahead.”
