Watford captain Troy Deeney has praised Raheem Sterling for the way he has handled abuse that was racist also states he’s come to be a role model for young individuals.
Sterling has become the topic of abuse occasionally throughout his career and has been targeted again during England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria in Wembley on Saturday.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man was detained on suspicion of a public order offence however following enquiries, he was discharged with no further action.
When asked if racism has increased in the last few years, Deeney told Sky Sports:”The question is, did it ever go away? That could be the biggest question.
“I believe we are living in a period where we can highlight it so much simpler. It can be highlighted by us with media and Raheem has become the talking and face point for everything.
“The very best thing he’s done is openly come out and talked about it that for most young kids coming up now should be the mantra of things to do. If you see an issue, talk about it.”
Back in April, Deeney said he and his relatives were subjected on social websites after the FA Cup success against Wolves of Watford.
The Watford striker responded by disabling opinions on his Instagram accounts after he received what he asserts were abusive messages from”small-minded people”, and he expects social media firms are finally starting to take note.
“Naturally you have to begin with social websites as it’s so strong now,” Deeney explained.
“Hopefully Twitter, Instagram and these sorts of social media platforms may find an understanding of what it’s like from a player’s perspective and a standard person on the street, because we’re almost in 2020 and they shouldn’t be affected that.
“We must keep working and keep doing everything we can to move this world ahead.”
