Fernando Alonso has given his strongest hint yet that he is interested in returning to Formula 1 – possibly for the sport’s rules overhaul.
Alonso is back at the paddock in the Italian GP this weekend before stepping at last season’s conclusion at his role as an ambassador for McLaren, that drove for at F1.
The Spaniard has competed in various motorsport types, winning the World Endurance Championship in June and making another attempt. He is currently examining in preparation for a possible debut at the Dakar Rally in January.
However, the speculation of a return to F1 is never far from the world champion.
And asked by Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes if his strategy was to come back to the entire tournament a day, Alonso responded:”Maybe.”

Pressed on whether he would wish to return next year, Alonso added:”Let us see. I need to come up with a couple of challenges out of Formula 1 which I need to finish. They aren’t yet completed, like the Indy 500 and another stuff.
“2021 with the new regulations, I think it’s a fantastic mix that we can find there and perhaps a different Formula 1 than that which we find now.
“The reasons why I abandoned Formula 1 final year are still present today with domination onto a clear team and the races that a bit too predictable, however 2021 these items could be changed and maybe it is a good opportunity there.”
Asked when he was talking to any teams, a smiling Alonso replied:”Always.”
Though it remains hard to see where Alonso can return in future, the 2005 and 2006 world winner is considered one of the very talented F1 drivers of all time.
The Spaniard confessed the move to a calendar from second season would be something.
“22 races is non-stop, it is rather demanding. Let us see – I am getting old!” Added Alonso, who’ll be 39 years old by the beginning of 2021.
