When coming from top on Quizical For Cancer Trials Ireland at the Curragh in the Pat Smullen Champions Race, sir Anthony McCoy rolled back.
The record-breaking 20-times winner jumps jockey gave a vintage functionality to beat against eight other high jockeys from codes in the charity race which has received backing that was tremendous.
McCoy had his bracket at the prime position from the onset of the one-mile contest and soon had Quizical and travelling.
Regardless of top-weight, the 11-4 favourite galloped to conquer at Aussie Valentine – ridden by McCoy friend and long-time rival Ruby Walsh – with a half and a length dozen. Johnny Murtagh steered Red Striker into third place.
McCoy – that even performed a Frankie Dettori-style flying dismount afterwards – said:”I’m very proud to be here today racing for a terrific cause.
“We can be very proud of horse racing generally in Ireland. The team owners, trainers, jockeys – everybody has given so much assistance to the man that Pat Smullen is.
“Pat is a special person and a excellent friend to us all. Unfortunately it’s tough and sad circumstances what we are doing now, but it only shows you what a fantastic sport this is.”
He added:”I genuinely always thought that I was going to win! No you would like to compete against the best, that is what sport is all about, and these are the very best jockeys we are ever likely to see.
“I said I’d not ride in a horse race ever again and that I meant it, but I’m happy I did now. You would like to compete against the best and that’s what’s created this special.
“I got to the very best horse and that’s what counts.”
Smullen’s fame helped produce the throw for your race.
Dermot Weld’s former jockey was forced into retirement after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – and he was not able to ride inside himself as he is undergoing another round of treatment.
Clearly moved by the occasion, Smullen said:”I’m very happy for Sheila and John Lavery who own the horse. John was composed when he made AP to ride the horse to get this result is what everyone wanted. It is absolutely incredible. I am overcome.
“This isn’t about me. This is and we’re out make a massive difference and to increase a great deal of cash and give people assurance, as it will me.
“What a privilege to participate in what’s a great industry.”
