(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals ahead Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The drug is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Code.
“Recently, the IIHF told me, because of a positive test for a prohibited substance, I would be suspended from international competition for four years,” Kuznetsov said in a declaration. “I’ve made the decision to accept this punishment. Representing my country has been close to my own heart and something I take in pride. Not having the ability to put that sweater for four years is extremely hard to take.”
Kuznetsov is going to probably likely be ineligible for four years, with his suspension. He had been suspended on June 13.
“We know of the positive test outcome and associated global sanction that’s been enforced on Evgeny Kuznetsov,” that the Washington Capitals said in a declaration. “We are disappointed with this development and take this phenomenon seriously.
“Additionally, we’re dedicated to ensuring he has the essential support needed to work through this circumstance.”
Cocaine is not illegal under the Performance Enhancing Substances Program of the NHL and is not considered a performance-enhancing drug in the NHL.
“We understand that Mr. Kuznetsov has voluntarily sought help during the instruction and counseling program provided for in the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement and has agreed to some normal testing protocol relating to his involvement with that application,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly says that Kuznetsov has agreed to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, which no decisions have been made on whether some additional actions are required.
“I’ve disappointed so many people that are important for me, including my family, teammates and buddies,” Kuznetsov said. “From the first day that I took the ice at D.C., the Washington Capitals company and our fans are nothing but good to me and my loved ones. I feel awful for letting you down. I realize that the only real way I can win back you is to take ownership of my situation and my actions from this point forward.”
