Denis Irwin believes Manchester United’s hopes of a successful season rest on the back of Paul Pogba.
Even the France World Cup winning midfielder ended last year with 13 goals as leading goalscorer for United, while also topping the standings for most assists with eight.
Former United defender Irwin insists Pogba includes a attitude which is critical for Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s side to improve last season.
“There’s not too many gamers of Paul’s quality,” Irwin stated. “He’s got lots of players in front of him who’ve got great speed and I think he has the comprehension of having the ability to pick a wonderful pass.
“We need consistency out of him occasionally but moving forward now and particularly where we’ve started dominating games he’s likely to be a big, big player for us.
“I believe every team needs a risk taker but I consider him and believe he’s the one that could unlock doors.
“We have created enough chances to win games so he’s going to be extremely significant for us.”
United have picked up four points from their opening five matches, leaving them in eighth place going into the international break.
They were forced to settle for a draw off on Saturday, leaving them without a win since their opening day thrashing over Chelsea.
However, Irwin is convinced that his side are going in the perfect direction and states that fans must accept the process will take time.
“I understand that we’ve only picked up two points from three matches but it feels like we ought to have more,” Irwin added.
“We may need to accept a small bit of patience and we might not challenge the initial two this season but we need to maintain there and much better than annually.
United will be sweating on the fitness of summertime signing Aaron Wan Bissaka, who was made to withdraw with a back injury from the group on Tuesday of England.
The 21-year-old has impressed because his #50m go from Crystal Palace, also Irwin believes summer improvement Harry Maguire and Wan Bissaka will bolster a United defence which accelerates last year to 54 goals.
“His positional sense looks really, really good,” Irwin explained.
“That’s a massive surprise for someone that’s been a winger for decades. He’s got a great deal to learn but he has been a big plus this season.
“We need to begin keeping clean sheets but I think we’ve begun making steps in the perfect direction in helping in our defensive job, I truly do.”
