A row has been sparked by michael Owen’s new book on interpersonal media involving the England striker and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.
One of the more cutting outlines from the publication comprises Owen’s claim that his transfer from Real Madrid to the Magpies in 2005 has been a”down step” and the 1 move he”really regrets”.
The pair traded barbed tweets since the story broke on Tuesday – but what’s the history of their feud?
In Reboot – My LifeMy Time, which has been serialised in the Daily Mirror, Owen goes into detail about his relationship with Newcastle’s fans during an injury-hit spell with the club, which ended with him linking Manchester United following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship in 2009.
“I should have followed my gut instincts, I didn’t wish to move there – my heart was set on a return to Liverpool,” said Owen – who had left Anfield for Real in 2004 – of his go into St James’ Park.
The 39-year-old former England captain also claimed Newcastle were”only a huge club in the sense it has lots of fans and a major stadium”. Ouch.
Match of the Day pundit Shearer, the Magpies’ record goalscorer, reacted on networking.
Tweeting a chunk of Owen telling BT Sport in 2018 that he”could not wait to retire to the last six or seven decades” of his livelihood, Shearer published:”Yes, Michael, we thought that also, whilst on #120K a week.”
Enter Owen again, questioning Shearer’s devotion to Newcastle…
That retort got people talking, but where did this blood start?
The relegation in 2009 of newcastle appears to be the catalyst to get the group’s strained relationship, according to Owen’s publication.
Shearer was interim manager in the time and, heading into the final day of this year, the Magpies needed at least a draw at Aston Villa or his spell in the Premier League will come to an end.
Owen asserts he wasn’t fully fit but, with Villa 1-0 up during Damien Duff purpose, the striker arrived as a replacement in the 66th minute.
Newcastle could not discover a response and were condemned into the Championship, and Owen alleges Shearer was”seething” with him and insinuated the participant”had an eye on my next contract”, together with his current deal about to run out.
“I felt that I was being made a scapegoat,” explained Owen.
“When you analyse it, it all makes sense. Shearer’s record as director in the past eight matches of that 2008-09 season was dire: lost five, drew two, won one.”
Of his 49-year-old former England team-mate, Owen added:”Alan Shearer and that I still haven’t talked this out face to face and that’s a shame because, as I’ve said many, many occasions, we had been very good buddies.”
He then goes on to explain he had been part of a comprehensive interview using BT Sport in 2018 where he’d touched upon his adventures with injury in his career and has been taken aback by how Shearer had”began ranting about it on Twitter”.
Owen claims he needed a text dialog using Shearer following this tweet where he provided a justification after Shearer had stated Newcastle fans will be”unimpressed to hear he did not enjoy playing with there”.
“It moved , as I guessed, precisely nowhere,” he added.
As the spat continuing, gary Lineker, that hosts Match of the Day as well as working on BT Sport with Owen acted as peacemaker.
“There seems to be a bit of history here? I like you both so don’t wish to choose sides,” he tweeted.
