Watford captain Troy Deeney has praised Raheem Sterling for how he has handled racist abuse also says he’s come to be a role model for young individuals.
Sterling has become the topic of racist abuse occasionally during his career and has been targeted again through England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria in Wembley on Saturday.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed there was a man arrested on suspicion of a public order offence but enquiries that were after that he was discharged with no further action.
When asked when racism has increased in the past few years, Deeney told Sky Sports:”The inquiry is, did it go away? That might be the question.
“I think we are living in a time where we could highlight it so much simpler. We can highlight it with websites that is social and Raheem has become the talking and face point for everything.
“The best thing he’s done is come out and spoken about it that for most young kids coming up now ought to be the headline of exactly things to do. If you see an problem, talk about it.”
Back in April, Deeney said he and his relatives were subjected to racist abuse on media following the FA Cup success against Wolves of Watford.
The Watford striker reacted by disabling comments on his Instagram account after he obtained what he asserts were abusive messages from”small-minded individuals”, and he hopes social media companies are finally beginning to take note.
“Naturally you’ve got to begin with social networking because it is so strong now,” Deeney said.
“Hopefully Twitter, Instagram and these sorts of social media platforms can find an understanding of what it is like from a player’s standpoint and a normal individual on the street, because we are almost in 2020 and they shouldn’t be affected that.
“We must keep working and keep doing everything we can to go this planet forward.”
