Manchester City director Pep Guardiola says Raheem Sterling may be capable of reaching the level of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Following two fine displays for England this week supervisor Gareth Southgate said Sterling has the potential to become as great.
Guardiola says”nobody may compare” with them now but that Sterling should hope to achieve that amount.
“It’d be a fantasy for him, for many of us” said the Spaniard.
“In case Raheem can target that level – wow.
“We’ll be here to help him of course he can do it but I will not be the man to put limits to cancel it, to say’don’t, don’t think about that’. No, certainly not – it is wanted by me.
“But today, nobody in most of the clubs in the world can compare with both of these men and what they have completed every single week through 10 years.
“They’re complete legends and no one could compare, nobody.”
Sterling has scored eight goals in eight appearances for club and country this season, such as in the two of England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.
Guardiola says he hopes the compliments due to his performances does not diverted Sterling.
“I’m so happy for him, for the way he is playing here and together with the national team, but hopefully he will not see too much,” he said.
“He can’t listen to such kind of things – that would not be useful for him, because nobody can compare with Cristiano or Messi.
“I am so pleased with what he’s done because we’ve been together, not right now. Everything which has happened to him has ever been good because he has an incredible work ethic and is an incredibly nice guy. I’m thrilled for him.”
Guardiola also said Manchester City were unlikely to sign a defender from the January transfer window despite having two match.
It was confirmed the defender Aymeric Laporte will probably likely be out until February after knee operation.
That leaves just Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones as centre-backs to City, after the passing of Vincent Kompany into Anderlecht.
“We will endure with the players we’ve got,” explained Guardiola.
“My advice for you is to not write a lot of titles about the winter transfer window since you’re likely to make a mistake. I don’t think that it’s going to happen.
“I learned already we are interested in this player or the other player but I’d love to convey to all the clubs in the world do not be nervous, because we’re uninterested in any gamers or even central defenders in Europe.”
England defender Stones can play at Norwich City on Saturday at the 17:30 BST kick-off after recovering from a knee injury which has kept him out since the season’s opening match.
