Fernando Alonso has given his strongest hint yet that he is considering returning to Formula 1 – possibly for the rules overhaul of the sport in 2021.
Alonso is back from the paddock at the Italian GP this weekend in his ongoing role as an ambassador for McLaren, who he last drove for in F1 before stepping off from a race seat at the conclusion of last season.
The Spaniard has competed in several other motorsport groups, winning the World Endurance Championship in June and making a second effort at the Indy 500. He’s now testing in preparation for a introduction.
But the speculation about a racing yield to F1 is never far away from your 38-year-old former world champion.
And requested by Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes when his strategy was to return to the entire tournament a day, Alonso responded:”Maybe.”

Pressed on whether he’d wish to go back a year ago, Alonso added:”Let us see. I want to determine a couple of distinct challenges out of Formula 1 which I want to finish. They are not yet finished, like another stuff and the Indy 500.
“2021 using all the new regulations, I personally think it’s a great mix which we can locate there and maybe a different Formula 1 than what we see now.
“The reasons why I left Formula 1 last year are still present today with domination onto a transparent team along with the races that a bit too predictable, but 2021 these items could be changed and perhaps it is a good chance there.”
Asked if he was speaking to some teams, a smiling Alonso responded:”Always.”
Although it remains difficult to see where Alonso could return in future, the 2005 and 2006 world winner is regarded as one the very gifted drivers of all time.
The Spaniard also admitted the move to a 22-race calendar from next season could be something to consider.
“22 races is nonstop, it is quite demanding. Let’s see – I’m getting old!” Added Alonso, who’ll be 39 years old by the beginning of 2021.
