Fernando Alonso has given his strongest hint yet that he’s interested in returning to Formula 1 – potentially in 2021 for the rules overhaul of the sport.
Alonso is back in the paddock at the GP this weekend before stepping off from a race seat in the conclusion of last year in his role as an ambassador for McLaren, that last drove for in F1.
The Spaniard has competed in several other motorsport groups, winning the World Endurance Championship in June and making another try. He is now examining in preparation for a potential introduction in the Dakar Rally in January.
However, the speculation about a yield to F1 is not far away from your world champion.
And asked by Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes when his plan was to come back to the world championship a day, Alonso replied:”Maybe.”

Pressed on whether he’d want to go back a year ago, Alonso added:”Let us see. I want to find a couple of challenges out of Formula 1 that I need to complete. They aren’t yet finished, such as another stuff and the Indy 500.
“2021 with the new regulations, ” I personally think that it’s a great mix that we can find there and perhaps a distinct Formula 1 in what we find now.
“The reasons why I left Formula 1 last year are still present today with domination onto a clear team along with the races that a little bit too predictable, however 2021 these things could be changed and perhaps it is a fantastic opportunity there.”
Asked when he had been talking to some groups, a grinning Alonso responded:”Always.”
Although it remains hard to see where Alonso will return in future the 2005 and 2006 world winner is considered one of the most gifted drivers of all time.
The Spaniard confessed the move to some 22-race calendar from season could be something.
“22 races is nonstop, it is quite demanding. Let’s see – I am getting old!” Added Alonso, who’ll be 39 years old by the start of 2021.
