Fernando Alonso has given his strongest hint yet that he’s interested in returning to Formula 1 – potentially for the rules overhaul of the sport in 2021.
Alonso is back from the paddock at the GP this weekend before stepping out from a race seat in the conclusion of last year in his continuing role as an ambassador for McLaren, that he drove for in F1.
The Spaniard has since competed in various motorsport groups, winning the World Endurance Championship in June and creating another effort. He is currently examining in preparation for a introduction in the Dakar Rally in January.
However, the speculation about a yield to F1 is never far away from the world champion.
And asked by Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes when his strategy was to come back to the world championship a day, Alonso responded:”Maybe.”

Pressed on whether he would want to go back next year, Alonso added:”Let’s see. I need to find a couple of challenges out of Formula 1 which I want to finish. They are not yet finished, such as the Indy 500 and another stuff.
“2021 together with all the new regulations, I think it’s a good mix which we can find there and perhaps a distinct Formula 1 in what we see now.
“The reasons why I abandoned Formula 1 last year are still present today with domination on a clear team and the races that a little bit too predictable, however 2021 these items can be changed and perhaps it is a good chance there.”
Asked when he was talking to any teams, a smiling Alonso responded:”Consistently”
The 2005 and 2006 world winner is considered one of the very talented F1 drivers of all time, though it remains difficult to observe where Alonso could reunite in future.
The Spaniard also admitted the move to a calendar from season could be a thing to take into account.
“22 races is nonstop, it’s rather demanding. Let’s see – I am getting old!” Added.
