Andy Murray won his first ATP Tour-level match in Europe for 16 months as he beat Belgian Kimmer Coppejans at the opening round of the European Open.
The former world number only continued his return by hip operation by beating wildcard Coppejans, rated 158th on the planet, 6-4 7-6 (7-4).
This week 32, murray, will face eighth seed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay or even Bolivian Hugo Dellien at the last 16.
Fellow Briton Cameron Norrie dropped 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 to Spains Feliciano Lopez.
Lopez asserted the only break of serve in the fifth game of the second set and proceeded to triumph in an hour and 29 minutes.
Norrie had Lopez at 0-40 at the final game of the match but was unable to break .
Regardless of the defeat Norrie will grow to be the British number two this week, behind Dan Evans, who substituted Kyle Edmund at the top of the national rankings on Monday.
Edmund, who won the championship in Antwerp in 2018, dropped this season in qualifying and has been set to fall outside the world top 70.
Since defeating on Stan Wawrinka at Eastbourne in June 2018 three-time Grand Slam winner Murray then acquired his first success.
Murray held a 3-0 lead at the first place but three faults resulted in him being busted back, but the Scot broke again in the 10th game.
He clinched the set at a match that lasted 44 minutes to one hour in a tie-break.
Antwerp is very likely to be Murrays final tournament of this year, with the exception of the Davis Cup next month.
He expects to play at the Australian Open in January but is likely a break once the European Open finishes and could leave Antwerp early if his wife goes into early labour with their third kid.
