Kimbrel’s extended layoff, long-term viability and the past year’s bad performance in the postseason with the Red Sox (5.91 ERA, 1.59 ERA in 10??2/3 innings more than nine looks ) were a number reason why teams were reluctant to sign him in free agency and he has been inconsistent this season. He did follow two poor outings in July.
The majority of Kimbrel’s appearances have been clean but he’s also allowed three earned runs on three distinct occasions, which explains his bad 5.68 ERA in 19 innings over 21 appearances this year.
Keeping and control the ball in the park are his main problems. Kimbrel has 11 walks and he’s hit two batters in these 19 innings of work, surrendering six home runs (one shy of last season’s career-high seven).
If the Cubs would like to make the postseason, Kimbrel has to return once he’s ready to choose the mountain to get them to form. Hopefully, his battles are not a indication of decline in helping the team win a second Central Division crown and a good showing if he comes against the Cardinals goes a long way.
