(CNN) — The last time Serena Williams had played at Arthur Ashe Stadium — a remarkable loss to Naomi Osaka from the 2018 US Open final — it directed her to start seeing a therapist and also kept her out of wanting to pick up a tennis racket.
It is a story that’s been often: A year ago, that a then-20-year-old Naomi Osaka had prevailed against her idol 6-2to win her first big, but it was overshadowed by controversy.” Serena Williams battled with seat umpire Carlos Ramos, culminating when he docked her a game for calling him a”thief.” Following the game, while the trophy was recognized by Osaka, boos rang around Arthur Ashe Stadium. A US Tennis Association spokesman told CNN the Ramos would not function as chair umpire for some of the Williams sisters’ matches in the 2019 US Open.
When asked in her post-match press conference for her response to the USTA choosing not to possess the Portuguese umpire officiate her matches, Serena Williams replied:”I don’t know who that is.”
Sharapova has been ranked 87th going into the US Open. She will fall from the top 100.
“This is a really distinct chapter in my career,” Sharapova said.
“It is not a simple road. It has never been. But I went through a shoulder process about four weeks ago. To locate myself playing with people excited about the matchup at the US Open, it is a pretty major thing. I am fortunate to be part of that.
“It’s simple to be frustrated after having a match like this. However, when I am personally frustrated, I wake up tomorrow, I don’t feel as I wish to head out, train, and be greater, that’s more discouraging than the outcome.”
A beginning was highlighted by the game into the tennis season that had eight US Open champions playing Monday’s final major.
Venus Williams Federer triumph
Among these champions is. The American is currently 21-0 in the first round of the US Open in her career. In 39 years old, she is the oldest player in the singles draw by 24 years of the women ; Coco Gauff is your youngest at 15.

The win improves Djokovic’s first-round listing in the US Open to 14-0. The Serbian is in his final 35 games in grand slam tournaments.
“It was a good performance,” Djokovic said. “I believe I can play , but it is kind of anticipated for the first match and then, you know, I’m hoping I can build from here.”
The Swiss has not won this grand slam event, while Federer is one of those favorites. And while Federer and Rafael Nadal have never faced each other the champion now has faced a Nagal. That could be Sumit Nagal of India, a qualifier ranked 190th that hasn’t won a match. Following a hiccup in losing the first set, Federer went on to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. His first-round record in the US Open now stands in 19-0.
“It was a challenging first set for me personally because I had the lead so things were looking good for me, but (Nagal) came and played very powerful,” Federer, who finished with 57 unforced errors, said to ESPN. “Credit to him to really play a strong first group. I had been missing a great deal of balls and I tried to cut back to the mistakes and serve a bit better because that let me down. All of it came back in time. In the end, I actually played great tennis, so I am glad.”
Pliskova survive 1st-round games to progress
There was almost a major surprise to start the US Open in the women’s singles draw. But catastrophe has been avoided, and the chase for the world No. 1 position is penalized.
No. 2 Ashleigh Barty overcame a dreadful start, bouncing back after being down a series, to defeat No. 80 Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Australian is among three women, linking No. 3 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic and No. 4 Simona Halep of Romania, in fact to recover the world No. 1 ranking, which is now held by Osaka.
The French Open winner, barty, is the frontrunner, trailing Osaka by 105 points. She also held the top spot for seven weeks this summer.
“Maybe not the perfect beginning, maybe not the ideal beginning, but it’s what it is,” Barty, who had 36 unforced errors in the game, said. “We were able to find a way then to get into the match and be more patient and really just kind of lock and wait until I got the perfect chunks and appropriate patterns that I wanted.
“This was probably the biggest change in the second and third is I managed to acquire more of these patterns more frequently and ultimately construct pressure to make more chances to split.”
Pliskova, who needs to reach the quarterfinals to have a chance endured two tiebreaks against Czech Tereza Martincova, who’s ranked 138th, ahead of the second round.
“Not ideal, but I am through so that is critical,” Pliskova said. “Of course, like I said before, the very first rounds they’re always a bit nervous, I would say, for most of the players. Does not help that you play a person from the country, because then it includes some additional nerves.”
Osaka must defend her name to maintain the No. 1 position. She’ll play Russian Anna Blinkova on Tuesday.
