(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The medication is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Code.
“Recently, the IIHF told me, due to a positive test for a prohibited substance, I would be suspended from international competition for four decades,” Kuznetsov said in a declaration. “I’ve made the decision to accept this penalty. Representing my country has ever been close to something and my heart that I take in pride. Not having the ability to put that sweater on for four years is very hard to take.”
Kuznetsov will probably likely be ineligible for four decades, with his suspension finishing on June 12, 2023. He had been suspended on June 13.
“We know of the positive test result and related global sanction that has been enforced on Evgeny Kuznetsov,” the Washington Capitals mentioned in a statement. “We are disappointed with this growth and take this phenomenon seriously.
“Additionally, we’re committed to ensuring he has the essential support needed to work through this circumstance.”
Cocaine is not prohibited under the NHL’s Performance Enhancing Substances Program and is not thought to be a performance-enhancing drug in the NHL.
“We know that Mr. Kuznetsov has voluntarily sought help through the instruction and counselling program provided for in the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement and has agreed to a regular testing protocol relating to his participation with that program,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly states that Kuznetsov has consented to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, on whether any further actions are required, and that no decisions are made.
“I’ve disappointed so many people that are important to me, including my family, teammates and friends,” Kuznetsov said. “In the very first day I took the ice at D.C., the Washington Capitals business and our supporters were nothing but great for me and my family. I feel absolutely horrible for letting you all down. I realize the only way I can win back you would be to take ownership of my situation and my activities from this point forward.”
