(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The medication is banned under the World Anti-Doping Code.
“Lately, the IIHF told me, because of a positive test for a banned substance, I’d be suspended from international competition for four decades,” Kuznetsov said in a declaration. “I have made the decision to accept this penalty. Representing my country has been near my own heart and something that I take inside much pride. Not being able to put that sweater on for a long time is extremely tough to take.”
Kuznetsov is going to probably likely be ineligible for four decades, together with his suspension finishing on June 12, 2023. He was provisionally suspended on June 13.
“We are aware of the positive test outcome and associated global sanction that has been enforced on Evgeny Kuznetsov,” that the Washington Capitals stated in a declaration. “We are disappointed with this growth and take this occurrence seriously.
“In addition, we are dedicated to ensuring that he has the necessary support needed to operate through this circumstance.”
Cocaine isn’t illegal under the Performance Enhancing Substances Program of the NHL and is not considered a performance-enhancing medication from the NHL.
“We understand that Mr. Kuznetsov has sought help during the instruction and counselling program provided for in the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, and it has agreed to a regular testing protocol regarding his participation with that application,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly claims that Kuznetsov has agreed to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and that no decisions are made on whether some further actions are demanded.
“I’ve disappointed so lots of people that are important to me, including my family, teammates and friends,” Kuznetsov said. “From the very first day that I took the ice in D.C., the Washington Capitals company and our fans have been nothing but good to me and my loved ones. I feel awful for letting you down. I realize the only method I will win back you is to take ownership of my situation and my activities from this point forward.”
