(CNN) — The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov for testing positive for cocaine.
The medication is banned under the World Anti-Doping Code.
“Recently, the IIHF told me this, because of a positive test for a banned substance, I would be suspended from international competition for several years,” Kuznetsov said in a statement. “I have made the decision to accept this punishment. Representing my country has been close to something and my own heart that I take pride inside. Not having the ability to put that sweater for four years is very tough to take.”
Kuznetsov is going to likely be ineligible for four years, with his suspension. He had been suspended on June 13.
“We are aware of the positive test result and related global sanction that has been enforced on Evgeny Kuznetsov,” the Washington Capitals stated in a declaration. “We’re disappointed with this growth and accept this phenomenon seriously.
“In addition, we’re devoted to ensuring he has the necessary support needed to operate through this circumstance.”
Cocaine isn’t considered a medication from the NHL and isn’t prohibited under the NHL’s Performance Enhancing Substances Program.
“We know that Mr. Kuznetsov has voluntarily sought help through the instruction and counseling program provided for from the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, and it has agreed to some regular testing protocol relating to his participation with that application,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in a statement.
Daly claims that Kuznetsov has consented to a meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, on whether some disciplinary actions are required which no conclusions are made.
“I have disappointed so a lot of people that are important for me, including my loved ones, teammates and friends,” Kuznetsov said. “From the very first day I took the ice at D.C., ” the Washington Capitals company and our fans are nothing but great to me and my family. I feel awful for letting you down. I realize the only method I will win back you would be to take ownership of my situation as well as my activities from this point forward.”
