Joe Root should last to captain England along with the training set-up shouldn’t be split between the Test side and also groups in formats, says assistant trainer Paul Farbrace.
Australia win saw them retain the urn and a draw in the last match would hand their first home Ashes series loss since 2001 to England.
“Root is England’s best player,” Farbrace told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Until summer his record as Test captain has been very great.”
He added:”And yes, his runs average has fallen while he’s been captain (from 52.8 to 38.4) – that has occurred to each captain that has played the game probably.”
The 28-year-old, who took at the beginning of 2017 led the street in 2017-18 to a 4-0 series defeat in Australia.
But, his 50 percent gain ratio complete since skipper is far better but Michael Vaughan’s at the past 38 decades.
Farbrace included:”We need others at the top of the order to score runs. It is not just Joe Root.”
If his contract expires in the end of the month, head coach Trevor Bayliss is set to leave his function.
Former captain Vaughan told BBC Radio 5 Live that the 56-year-old Australian did a better job with the”white-ball team compared to the red-ball group” and indicated it is”almost impossible” for one individual to coach the Test, one-day and Twenty20 teams.
But when asked if the coaching set-up should be broken, Farbrace explained:”England have tried that earlier and it did not work last time.
“I think that there just has to be a single person, but perhaps the balance does have to shift back to red-ball cricket.
“We had a massive concentrate on white-ball cricket, and that has been very effective – England won the World Cup for the first time this year.
“There was a enormous emphasis on trying to do this and it’s been rough trying to win the Ashes and the World Cup in precisely the same year. And at the conclusion of the afternoon, the Australians really are a better team and deserve to win that sequence.”
The fifth and final Test starts at the Oval on Thursday.
