Once they chose to sack Jack Ross after 17 months in charge of the Black 28, sunderland are looking for their 11th supervisor in 10 years. But what exactly do they need today?
Ross was dismissed together with Sunderland sixth in Sky Bet League One after 11 games, on Tuesday, and the club are now looking for a new leadership.
The feeling of doubt is a familiar one for Sunderland lovers. The club was around for a downward trajectory since their relegation from the Premier League at 2017. However they have been able to turn the tidewith owners Stewart Donald and securing their future, and Charlie Methven attracting an air of positivity back to the team.
The appointment of Ross in May 2018, in theory, was what Sunderland. A gifted young and ambitious director, who had been educated and eloquent regarding the club.
Ross time started rather tumultuously, with a squad and players stuck on huge Premier League wages and contracts.
However, that the 43-year-old constructed a competitive and strong team which, on paper, must have been easily capable of automatic promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking and overcame this hardship.
The Black Cats began the effort but their kind dipped, following scorer Josh Maja signed for Bordeaux. They attained that the EFL Trophy final but were beaten on penalties by Portsmouth. The season ended in dramatic fashion, as Ross guys succumbed in the final, which condemned them to some other season in the next tier to some last-minute Charlton target.
Sunderland fans saw as a significant failure last years failed promotion attempt, but theMackem loyal seemed encouraging of the decision to stay with Ross for a second campaign, although with the caveat of advertising being a minimum requirement of Donald.
In the summertime, the team dropped some crucial and powerful characters in the room. Captain George Honeyman and longest-serving player Lee Cattermole equally went to pastures new, as well as seasoned full-backs Bryan Oviedo, Reece James and Adam Matthews.
League One replacements such as Conor McLaughlin, George Dobson and Jordan Willis were introduced in, in an attempt to build a more robust and balanced aspect to compete at the third tier.
With his players and Ross apparently experiencing a hangover the season did not get off to the best of starts.
The last straw for those fans was their recent 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers. This was the very first time there appeared to be a collective acrimony from the off end towards the manager.
Anger turned to apathy following Saturdays 2-0 defeat away to Lincoln City, with lots of the away support leaving the ground after the Imps moment.
Sunderland fan podcastWise Men Say submitted a Rossin-or-out poll on Twitter following the sport – the outcomes of which were an 86 percent against the Scot.
Donald, who has done his best to reconnect with all the fan-base listened to the cries and also brought Ross reign to an end.
I think Jack Ross did OK as boss, but I only feel like he was a tiny bit too relaxed in his mannerisms, said former Sunderland striker Stephen Elliot.
Sometimes it looked like the team had that little bit extra in games to have wins. Games used to fizzle out.
I believe he awakened his squad because of that he fought to obtain a settled starting 11.
One of Ross trademarks in his Sunderland tenure, was that the glut of 1-1 draws and collapse to kill games off when his side was in control. However he didnt have a good listing on paper, achieving the third-highest triumph percentage of any boss in Sunderlands history and only dropping one match at the Stadium of Light.
Elliot considers the decision of Donald.
I believe that it was the ideal time to part ways with Jack, since I think if he had stayed it might have been a second unsuccessful promotion bid. I really do think Jack will have heard a good deal during his time as manager, and can go on and be a victory elsewhere since he appears to be a excellent guy.
Paul Cook and gareth Ainsworth are on the shortlist of Sunderland to substitute Ross as manager, the latter of anideal candidate.
I think Sunderland desire a supervisor that has expertise in getting promotions and handling clubs with higher demand from supporters, said Elliot.
Mick McCarthy or even Roy Keane could be excellent for me since they know the club, however, if they had to punish someone in current league management, I believe Paul Cook would be an ideal candidate.
He did some terrific work in Pompey, in which there was huge pressure by fans, after which at Wigan for the past couple of seasons.
Unlike during previous regimes, the following Sunderland director will soon be coming into a club that is somewhat stable, having a squad and at a good position in the table. This doesnt deter from the fact that this appointment is a must for the club, and its one they cant become wrong.
The club should make sure this appointment would be the correct one, said Elliot.
The club has to be at the top two divisions minimum, because its supporters deserve so much more than what they have received in the previous three or four seasons.
A hero is required and the next man appointed has to be that protagonist, as languishing at the third tier for more could be a tragedy for this huge club.
Sunderland game comes off at the Wycombe on October 19 of Ainsworth.
